I am an international student studying in the US. To finance my education, I took out a student loan from a US financial institution. The loan was a guaranteed loan and did not require a co-signer who is a US citizen. Now, I have not been able to find work and am thinking about returning to my home country. In my country, the pay scale is much lower and I will be unable to repay my loans with the salary I will earn. If I default on the loan, what is the worst that could happen? I know that my credit history in the US will be damaged, but can the lending institution possibly sue me in my home country? FYI, the lending institution is a global bank, which also has offices in my country, however the loan was obtained from a US-based student loan division. Can they use their local offices sue me? Or, can the US office still go after me in my home country?
Can an international student be sued in his home country for defaulting on a student loan issued in the US?mortgage rate
It depends upon the agreements between the two countries.
