Can you cash a patriot bond early?

i need cash (i%26#039;m a broke college student needing car repairs)



and i have a few not-quite-mature patriot savings bonds that i%26#039;d like to cash. does anyone know if i can? or if i have to do it a certain way?

A Patriot Bond is identical to an EE savings bond except it has Patriot printed on it. You can take it to most banks to redeem. It does not have to be fully matured to redeem. However, if you do redeem before it is 5 years old, you would lose 3 months interest. For more details, see attached link.

I know that if you redeem the bond before 5 years of the purchase date listed on the bond you will have to face a 3-month interest penalty, which simply means they will take the past 3 months of interest. The only other problem might be that the bond has also probably not reached face value since it is only guaranteed to reach face value 17 years from the initial purchase date. Link follows below:
